LOSTSONAR - "Underpass"

The Canadian artist lostsonar has created a beautifully realized spatial track with “Underpass” that creates entire worlds of sound through the manipulation of field recordings, samples and a unique approach to percussion that sounds truly three-dimensional. Distorted synths and heavy decay make up the second half of the track drawing positive associations with Laurel Halo and Oneotrix Point Never. According to the press release, the spiritual inspiration of “Underpass” is related to the following incident.

“It was brought to life by the inspiration of their lost heritage and an unforeseen strike of inspiration delivered from a dear friend. “I spent many late nights talking to my best friend in our kitchen back when we lived together in our Hamilton [Ontario] apartment. There was one in particular I found myself always wandering back to- this lengthy discussion on our lack of cultural connection. Both of our families are from the same island in the Azores yet we have no connection to that part of our lineage. I remember him swinging his legs as he sat on the counter while we talked about broken familial chains and callings to physical places. He went with his sisters to Sao Miguel in the Azores the next summer- I still have never been. It was the same summer I decided to take music more seriously. I ended up in the deep pits of my first musical rut trying to force a consistent stream of creativity and often ended up revisiting this kitchen conversation in my head instead of working. It was one of these days when I was at my laptop frustrated with my lack of current inspiration that an email popped up in my inbox. It was a collection of samples he took trekking through what I guess is our shared “homeland”. It was like he knew even across the ocean. This album is actually a birthday gift to him.“"
