Videodrone: Former Selves – "Zones"

Fait Accompli

This is not a Videodrone.

"Bridgetown #50," reads the spine of Paul Skomsvold's addition to the Kevin Greenspon's ever diversifying, always satisfying collection or releases in brilliant, shimmering silver. Fait Accompli is a proud and really unique milestone for the California imprint; the new audio/visual album out now on DVD, containing a number of really amazing experiments layering light beams and digital colorizations atop found footage and screen shooting techniques. The music is also quite the beautiful experience as well, and of course it's how the two work together that makes the album really special...

I didn't want to wait to collect all my thoughts on the album's various meanderings to share  some of what this thing has to offer, so this Vimeo clip will have to do for now. But remember, this is not a Videodrone. And actually, I don't really recommend even watching this clip, especially not on a laptop and especially not with crummy on-board speakers. If you can, the best way to experience Fait Accompli is to grab the disc, pop it into your home system and listen to/watch Fait Accompli in full. I know, it seems like a sleazy sales pitch, but trust me on this one. Turn the lights down low. Keep the volume at about mid range, and stare straight through this thing until your mind is one with the RGB pixels.

Skomsvold's music and visuals find a way to mellow out harsh light and bright tones, while also accentuating the equally-opposite soft ones, framing the two extremes in an elegant casio-nova dance, not unlike the one that grooves this track home in the final half. "Zones" (music and visuals) is a nice example of Skomsvold's style, but only a taste of what the full DVD has to offer—far from the album's best work... but we'll get to that in a review coming soon.

This is good. Trust me, it gets better. Go grab one here and thank me later.
