Promissory ‘s members are spread between Pennsylvania and Arizona, but their collaborative sound feels as intimate as 3 members performing in the same room with heavy amounts of musical ESP. The group’s sound on “Blue Star” is a subtle blending of post-rock guitars, the muted pulse of synthwave and eliding, stereo-panning drones. “Blue Star” resists many of the paint-by-numbers clichés of much modern synthwave and buries the characteristic arpeggios deep below the substrate, the bass line felt more than heard.
