Sensory deprivation can do strange things to a person’s mind. Individuals experiencing such deprivation can experience sensory hallucinations and effects that mimic psychosis. For many of us, going into lockdown was a similar experience – the experience of being alone with oneself can lead to some interesting and dark places. The Irish artist Eoin Lyness created a response to this by releasing the Isolation Tapes – an audio journal of sorts. “Isolation III” sounds like it’s at rock bottom – scraping drones, fragments of field recordings, feedback heavy guitar work – all create a claustrophobic and downright frightening aural environment to live in. This musique concrete heavy track offers a peek into Lyness’s experience during a global pandemic that has shaped 2020’s musical output in significant ways.
