“But When You Sleep” is an excellent collaboration between UK based neo-classical outfit Gifts From Crows and visual artist Helena Whitten. “But When You Sleep” is stirring composition that utilizes piano trills and intersecting lines as a repeating motif against Whitten’s striking black and white images. Longing strings hold the composition in constant movement, cradling each movement in a seaside push and pull.
The images by Whitten are described as such, “Helena uses the technique of slow-shutter exposure to capture the beauty and fragility of life, the subjects distorted through the effect of motion blur. In her films however, the subject is frozen in time whilst the landscape moves around them. In this way her artwork is the mirror opposite of her photography but the desire to find beauty in abandoned or unexpected places is a common theme.”
