Inspired by the Luis Borges short story The Aleph – a single spherical point where all things can be seen – “In the Scrying Pool” by the UK based Gifts from Crows builds out from and around a piano line that wends its way through swells of strings and a double bass line that are both largely improvised. By giving these instruments, and the time signature it was performed at, latitude to stretch and bend to fill in the nooks and crannies, “In the Scrying Pool” feels endless and open – as if the next movement is always just over the horizon. Videographer Corey Rid takes the camera and the viewer through deep woods, abandoned houses and the sun breaking through clouds in a deep, chromatic black and white and without disrupting the track’s circulatory flow.
