The UK ambient artist’s latest track “Northern Contours” represents a lot of what I love about ambient music. The monochromatic grey on the cover has a muting effect that allows us to take in the composition as a whole or attempt to distinguish the parts of its sum. Guitar, bass, synth, voice and violin are all present in the composition but run through a granular synthesizer so as to obscure each of its particular movements without great concentration and better headphones. Taken as a whole, the track washes over us in lapping waves of tone. Doing what all great ambient music does. Allowing the listener to settle into the rise and fall of warm tonal tides.
