“Impossible Routines” is the lead single off of the Berlin-based cellist’s new album All Ghosts are Gone. In it we hear Bertoni’s cello take impossible shapes: it creates lapping, droning passages, delicate plucked rhythmic measures, dark arpeggios and textural tonal shifts that veer into the red. None of what I described, however, sound like they were composed on the cello. It was Bertoni’s goal of “I wanted my cello to sound completely alien”. Bertoni achieves that with supremely listenable and fascinating results.
