On “Days Like This” Matthew Ryals continues his 2020 deep dive into creating accessible pop music using the tools of the bleepers and bloopers. What I mean by this is creating fully fleshed pop songs using famously finicky modular synthesizers. On “Days Like This” Ryals is dancing on the precipice of losing older selves in the presence of a new relationship atop a sea of a staggered house beat, bright arpeggios and and throbbing bass lines and a newfound focus on Ryals’ voice as a major vehicle pushing the composition forward. Today, all sales will go to Afrorack to raise money for their music education program. They provide access to modular synthesizers, other music gear, and music education to Black youth in Chicago.
