“Be Who You Are”, beyond any musical signifiers, is a call for radical self-acceptance and invitation to take up the space you are entitled to. Recorded in the remote cabin of Skyforest, California “Be Who You Are” showcases enigmatic Los Angeles artist Lola G.’s floating vocals and her heavy-yet-shimmering guitars. Death Hags marry Jesus and the Mary Chain post-punk detachment and effects-laden guitars and drum machines with personal and affecting lyrics that recall The Cure’s emotional intelligence. In fact, its hard not to hear ___ lead guitar work that rips holes in the composition by sounding impossibly lush while maintaining a noisy ground floor of heavy distortion and reverb. Recorded with Tomas Dolas (Thee Oh Sees), the Skyforest edit of “Be Who You Are” sounds wholly lived in, like it was cut with minimal overdubs while sounding preposterously full and polished.
