“New Basis” by the UK based audio visual aritst Halina Rice is an expertly crafted 3D rendered dreamspace that is easy to get lost in. Musically, the deep harmonic chords, uptempo 2-step shuffle and deeply experimental sound design are reminiscent of artists like Jlin, Holly Herndon, Maya Jane Coles, Ellen Allien. Of the composition Rice states that, “the music and visuals are all about contrast and collision. “There are long harmonic progressions with the feel of a classical composition but created in an electronic style. The process of creating the tracks encompasses multi-layered percussion, often derived from foley recordings, but paired with detuned synths and sampling.”
This musical interplay between classical and experimental, organic and inorganic is also reflected in the visuals. For the eponymous lead track Rice worked with visual artist Freny Antony to create a video based on 3D scans of natural objects. “Effectively the scanned data was altered, changed and distorted. It was a process of experimentation for Freny and myself - recreating these objects and finding new forms that we found interesting as being both unfamiliar and elegant.”
