HANNA OJALA - "ON THE DARK SIDE OF A STAR / FINNISH SUMMER / SPRINGING SONG"
I am focusing on three recently released songs by the Finnish artist Hanna Olaja. The first is "On the Dark Side of a Star" which floats effortlessly on shifting ambient pads and gentle arpeggios that pull inherent melodies through the haze. Embedded in this work is Ojala's excellent field recording work - a through line between most of her work.
"Finnish Summer (Love)" is completely new terrain for Ojala. A stark, house-influenced dance track that folds in field recordings of a sauna with a pounding house beat, thick and syrupy bass line and a tempo break toward the end of the track that really pulls out the track's driving melody.
"Springing Song" allows playful synth melodies to run over and through field recordings of a Finnish spring in full bloom. These looped synth passages eventually fold over themselves revealing new passages to access a auditory recreation of a Spring afternoon.
