TRISTAN DE LIEGE X GREGORY ALLISON - "CYCLING"

This particular collaboration between composer / producer Tristan de Liege and violinist Gregory Allison is a shared celebration of a love for riding bicycles the two share. Hoping that the “cycling” in question was of the bicycle variety, I have been speculating how this excellent track which features subtle electronic percussion, eliding violin lines and pulsing violin passages, factor in to the overall feeling of cycling. According to the press release, “the piece evokes the characteristic feeling of freedom while riding, imagining one is flying through the air, untethered to the earth, experiencing a complete freedom of movement.” I can relate to those feelings of feeling untethered to earth while cycling – a calming stillness that comes from being centrifugally sucked in while going downhill. The two approach their collaboration in an interesting way. The press release again, “the duo recorded short melodic and rhythmic loops that they would then piece together, layer, and manipulate into cohesive sections. This process of simultaneously composing and recording allowed them to find the sounds that matched the feeling they were working to achieve” Excellent collaboration between moving neo-classical work and subtle IDM influences.
